Common questions
No special equipment is needed. A smartphone, tablet, or laptop with a working camera and microphone is all that's required. For the best experience, position your device to show your hands on the piano keys — a gooseneck phone holder or small tripod makes this much easier, but is not essential.
Many of Ruth's students feel online lessons are just as effective as in-person — and sometimes better, because you're learning on your own piano in your own comfortable environment. The absence of travel time and cost is also a significant benefit. Ruth has extensive experience making online lessons as productive as possible for students of all ages and levels.
Absolutely. Ruth welcomes complete beginners of all ages — from children as young as 4 to adults returning to the piano after years away. For complete beginners, live video call lessons (Zoom, FaceTime, or Teams) are usually the best starting point, as the real-time interaction and immediate guidance helps build strong foundations. Video exchange lessons are better suited to students who already have some basic piano knowledge.
Video exchange is Ruth's unique correspondence lesson format. You film yourself playing your piano (no special equipment needed — a phone is fine), send the video to Ruth via Google Drive, Dropbox, or YouTube (unlisted), and Ruth watches carefully and sends back a detailed written and/or video response with feedback and your next assignment. There's no fixed lesson time, it works across any timezone, and the feedback is yours to keep and review as many times as you like. Learn more →
Ruth teaches via Zoom, FaceTime, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, or WhatsApp Video — whichever works best for you. Important Zoom tip: set "suppress background noise" to Low in Zoom's audio settings, or enable "Original Sound for Musicians." This prevents Zoom from mistakenly treating piano sound as background noise.
