Ruth Pheasant · BA (Hons) Music · FISM · Essex, UK
A lifelong musician
"I don't believe that rigidly sticking to one method works well for every learner, because everyone has different needs. Instead I work with your individual needs, and I identify and build upon your own strengths."
Ruth Pheasant has been teaching piano and music theory full-time since completing her BA (Hons) Music degree in 1999. With over 25 years of experience teaching students of every age, level, and background, she is one of the most qualified private piano teachers in the UK.
Based in Burnham on Crouch on the Essex coast, Ruth now teaches students worldwide via live video call and her unique video exchange lesson format — reaching students in the UK, USA, Australia, Sweden, Belgium, Czech Republic, Ireland, Egypt, and beyond.
Ruth achieved Grade 8 piano at age 16, went on to complete her music A Level, and later worked as an ABRSM accompanist before dedicating herself fully to teaching. Her university degree included advanced study in piano performance, composition, harmonisation, advanced ear training, musicology, and piano pedagogy.
Her Fellow of the ISM designation (FISM) — the highest professional credential in UK music education — recognises her sustained excellence as a teacher and musician. Her own recordings of original improvisations and classical repertoire are available on her YouTube channel, demonstrating the musical depth she brings to every lesson.

Ruth's journey
Ruth's love of music began long before her formal teaching career. From Grade 8 at 16 to Fellow of the ISM, her path reflects a life genuinely dedicated to music.
How Ruth teaches
Ruth does not apply a single rigid method to all students. She identifies each student's individual strengths, weaknesses, and learning preferences, then adapts her approach accordingly.
Music theory is integral to musical understanding, not an add-on. Ruth integrates theory naturally into lessons so students understand why, not just how to play.
"Playing real music, not just technical exercises." Students are introduced to genuine repertoire early, maintaining motivation and building musical identity.
Multiple parents have noted Ruth's particularly gentle, encouraging style — especially valuable for anxious adults returning after a break, and for young children finding their confidence.
